Tips on Planning An Excursion into the Royal Belum

Are you planning to visit the Royal Belum? Here are tips I will share with you on how you can make a day trip into this state park.Here is some background information about the park: The Royal Belum Rainforest is located in the northern most corner of the state of Perak. Bordering Thailand, it is known to be one of Peninsular Malaysia’s largest stretches of virgin jungle.Belum-Temengor is estimated to be around 130 million years old making it one of the world’s oldest rainforests on earth – it’s older than both the Amazon and the Congo.This large area thrives with birdlife and large animals regarded as highly endangered such as tapirs, tigers, sun bears, panthers, elephants and the endangered Sumatran rhino.

I would like to remind you this:A visit to the Royal Belum state park you will require advance arrangement of at least one week for the park permit processing. If you do not have sufficient time for the permit processing, there are also various excursions into the jungle south of the park and entry permit is not required.To country’s second largest lake, Lake Temengor, is situated within the state park. All excursions around the park area are conducted by boat as this is to only method available to access the areas of interest.

What’s great about this river?
Well, if you love tackling rapids one after the other and want a technical river course, then this is the perfect river for you.Imagine just a quick drive out of town and you are in a tropical jungle setting. Orchards, small towns, villages and meandering road will take you to Kampung Ulu Slim – the staging point of your adventure.

HERE ARE SOME KEY ATTRACTIONS IN THE AREA

“Bumbun” or observation shelters offer visitors a rare opportunity to glimpse wildlife from safety. An astounding number of exotic wildlife species including fourteen of the worlds most threatened mammals make their home in the forest.

Lake Temengor is a man-made lake where visitors can relax and enjoy the tranquility.

There are also small islands and beautiful waterfalls which can be visited for a relaxing experience.

The Royal Belum State Park is also the home to aboriginal tribes who live within the dense jungles going about their simple way of life.

WHERE TO STAY

There are only 2 resorts in the area for those looking for more comfortable stay. They are the Belum Rainforest Resort (use the link to book the hotel online) and the ~~Tasik Banding Resort~~ (closed down).

I don’t mean to be partial but I prefer the Belum Rainforest Resort – the rooms are pleasantly appointed and it has the lush, quiet resort feel. It is a bit expensive. The meals at the resort are satisfactory but can also be expensive.

There aren’t any restaurants outside of the resort and most of them are locally operated food stalls and they are not opened all the time. If you do not mind that, then it will be ok for you.

DON’T MISS THIS TIP

If you are staying at the Belum Rainforest Resort try driving up on the East – West Highway to Hentian Titiwangsa. It is a rest area. Nice cool temperature here and it gives you a panoramic view of the Royal Belum. It is just half an hour away (approx 31 kms)
